Sources and method

Each film page keeps two things apart. The film card and the dated facts — release date, director, series, running time — are drawn from public reference material and are meant to be accurate. The review around them is interpretation, and it is ours. When we are unsure about a detail, we leave it out rather than guess.

The core release records for these shorts are well documented. We check them primarily against the corresponding encyclopedia entries and standard filmographies of the Disney studio, and we link the relevant reference at the foot of each review so you can follow it yourself. Where accounts disagree — and for cartoons this old they sometimes do — we note the disagreement instead of picking a side silently.

Dates on this site follow release order. A cartoon's "year" is the year of its first theatrical release, not of any later reissue or home-video edition.

Where a film has entered the public domain — the shorts released in 1930 or earlier — we show an actual frame from it, sourced from Wikimedia Commons and used under its public-domain status. For the later cartoons, whose frames are still under copyright, we use original cover art made for this archive rather than reproduce copyrighted stills. The Steamboat Willie frame on the home page is likewise public domain.

We do not host the films, and we do not present our cover art as if it were original studio material.

This is an archive built by hand, and hands make mistakes. If you spot an error of fact, we want to fix it. The about page explains what the project is and how to think about it; corrections to the record are always welcome and always acted on.
