About this archive

Animation Vault is a small, independent project about the early Disney cartoons. Here is what that means, and what it does not.

01What this is

Animation Vault is a fan-run reference for the classic Disney animated shorts — the Mickey Mouse, Silly Symphony, Donald Duck and Goofy cartoons made roughly between the late 1920s and the early 1950s. Each entry pairs the verified release record for a film with a full review written from scratch. The goal is simple: to treat these shorts as the historical objects they are, and to say something honest about each one.

The site occupies the domain disneyfilmproject.com, which in an earlier life hosted a different, now-defunct blog about Disney films. This archive is a new and unrelated project. We did not write, and do not reproduce, any of the earlier site's material.

02What this is not

This is not an official Disney site. Animation Vault is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or connected to The Walt Disney Company or any of its subsidiaries. We do not speak for the studio, and nothing here should be read as coming from it.

Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, the film titles and every related mark named on this site are the property of their respective owners. We name them for identification, criticism and commentary — the ordinary business of writing about films — and for no other purpose. We do not host the cartoons themselves.

03How the reviews are written

Every review is original writing. We check the hard facts — release dates, directors, series order, running times — against public reference material, and we say where a page's facts come from on our sources and method page. The opinions are our own, and we try to keep them specific: what a short does well, where it repeats itself, and how it fits the run around it.

The archive is a work in progress. It starts with a set of the early shorts and grows as we write. If a film you expect is missing, it simply has not been covered yet.

Can I watch the cartoons here?
No. Animation Vault publishes writing and reference material about the shorts. It does not host or stream the films themselves.
